International Sociology Honor Society (AKD)
The Department of Sociology and Criminology is the Phi chapter (Region I) of Alpha Kappa Delta (AKD), the International Sociology Honor Society. Our chapter was formed in 2006. The eminent sociologist Emory Bogardus founded AKD in 1920. Today, it has roughly 500 chartered chapters in seven countries. All of them, including our Department's, share one purpose: "To investigate humanity for the purpose of service."
Dr. Hayden and Dr. DeCesare are the AKD chapter representatives for the 2010-11 academic year.
Student Association of Sociology (SAS)
The Student Association of Sociology (SAS) was formed in 1997. Since that time, it has served to enhance a greater sense of community within the Department of Sociology and Criminology by establishing closer relationships both between faculty and students, and among students who major or minor in sociology. Activities sponsored by the SAS include social events, attendance at academic conferences such as the New England Sociological Association (NESA), and scholarly presentations at conferences such as the annual New England Undergraduate Research Conference. The SAS facilitates faculty mentoring of sociology students in the area of scholarly development and has become an integral part of the educational process of Merrimack students that takes place outside the classroom. The SAS, therefore, has the dual function of serving social needs and promoting student scholarship.
Dr. Fairfax is the advisor for the SAS for the 2010-11 academic year.
