Alumni Profile

As a Merrimack undergraduate, Jennifer Salamone found herself making many decisions, from what courses to take to what clubs to join.  But one of the most rewarding decisions, she says, happened during her third semester when she declared an English major.  “I realized that the best decision for me was to pursue a course of study that built upon what I already enjoyed doing in my spare time.”  An avid reader and writer, Jennifer also has a passion for modern languages and joined the Italian club her freshman year. As a sophomore she was elected its president.  She also grew interested in Women’s Studies, declaring a minor her junior year.   The combination of English major and Women’s Studies minor inspired Jennifer to join the Justice and Peace Coalition, becoming its president during her senior year.  She marveled at how seamlessly her work with this organization fit with her classroom experiences.  Upon graduation, Jennifer was a recipient of the William J. Murray O.S.A. award, given annually to two students for their commitment to social justice.

Of all her decisions, Jennifer was most surprised at how quickly she found a career that matched her interests.  “As a senior, I was uncertain as to where my English degree might take me.  But once I started looking for a job, finding one was simple.”  Jennifer is currently employed as an abstract writer and editor for Ebsco Publishing.  “I was hired by a company well suited for English majors,” she reports.  “With a growing need for educated readers and writers, there will never be a shortage of jobs for those of us with English degrees.”
