School of Education: Undergraduate Program

Merrimack College's department of education offers dynamic, responsive and focused programs that prepare and support individuals to be thoughtful, passionate, and competent teachers and educational leaders. We do so because we believe in (1) deep learning, whereby our classrooms, our courses, and our passion are all grounded in the knowledge that learning matters; (2) bringing theory to life, whereby knowledge and practice must inform each other such that we connect books with classrooms and ideas with actions, and; (3) making a difference, whereby education can change our classrooms, our schools, and our communities. We prepare teachers who understand that schools play a key role in a diverse and democratic society and that education is transformation. Education transforms oneself and others. All of our actions, thoughts, and beliefs are thus grounded in four key attributes: Excellence & Equity, Collaboration; Augustinian Heritage; Engagement for Democracy.

The Undergraduate Program at Merrimack College offers a variety of teacher preparation programs in early childhood education, elementary education; moderate disabilities; middle school; and secondary education. All programs are grounded in the liberal arts and students take a variety of courses designed to strike a balance between content and methodology; theory and practice; and between ideas and the application of ideas to schools and to education programs in schools, grades K – 12.  Our faculty have in-depth K-12 and higher education experience and expertise. Please see our faculty bios for more information. The faculty strives to personalize their teaching to meet the unique needs of each student.  They know all of the education students and go out of their way to make learning in the classroom a significant, comfortable and challenging experience for everyone. Please see our program charts and advising sheets for detailed information.

The school of education is going through reaccreditation during the 2010-11 academic year. As such, please refer to these websites for the most current and accurate information about all departmental options and requirements.
