Through Knowledge to Wisdom
The M.Ed. Degree and Teacher Licensure programs at Merrimack College strive to equip professionals with the necessary tools and knowledge required in the complex environment of today's schools through: the study of relevant principles of critical issues; implementation of Massachusetts Curriculum Frameworks; exposure to special education concerns; and close examination of the process of becoming a competent teacher.

While the main focus of the program is fixed squarely on acquiring teaching competency, there are important corollary activities in which the candidate is engaged during the years of professional study.  These include:

*Preparation to take the Massachusetts Tests for Educator Licensure (MTEL).

It is essential for any individual in the field of education to engage in an extended period of supervised training - an experience called the Practicum.  The Practicum is offered as the culmination and capstone activity of the program's sequence of educational opportunities in teaching and learning.  Indeed, the Practicum is an intense experience in which the candidate applies the theory and knowledge gained in coursework, and endeavors to demonstrate competency in five state initiated standards:

a) Plans Curriculum and Instruction
b) Delivers Effective Instruction
c) Manages Classroom Climate and Operation
d) Promotes Equity
e) Meets Professional Responsibilities.
