Can I minor in accounting?

No. Accounting is a concentration within Business Administration. Your “major” would be business administration, and your degree will be a B.S.B.A. – Bachelor of Science in Business Administration.

Can I have a dual concentration with accounting and another business area?

No. Dual concentrations in Business Administration are not permitted. However, you can take courses in other business areas and may even complete their requirements as a concentration. This second concentration will not appear on your degree or transcript as a “second or dual concentration,” however, you can identify meeting those requirements on your resume and the courses will appear on your official college transcript.


Can I change my concentration in Business Administration?

Yes. You should meet with the chair of the area you wish to make your new concentration to review the requirements of the new concentration and understand the effects of the change on your academic program – such a change after the sophomore year could extend your studies beyond four years.


What are the Certified Public Accountant (C.P.A.) requirements in my state?

You can access the requirements for all states through the Web site of National Association of State Boards of Accountancy (NASBA) at www.nasba.org . At their site click on “Exams” - then click on “CPA EXAM” - then select your jurisdiction (state). Also, your state Society of CPAs most likely has information on certification requirements – search “(name of your state) Society of CPAs” on their Web site.

Do I need a graduate degree for a career in accounting?

No. However, many accountants will pursue graduate degrees in preparation for or during their careers. The most common graduate degrees sought are the master’s degree in accounting (M.S.A.), the master’s degree in taxation (M.S.T.), and the master’s degree in business administration (M.B.A.). Many accountants will also obtain professional certification(s) to enhance their status and career advancement. Common certification designations for accountants include the C.P.A. (Certified Public Accountant), C.M.A. (Certified Management Accountant), C.I.A. (Certified Internal Auditor), C.G.F.M. (Certified Government Financial Manager).

What other areas of study would help prepare for a career in accounting?

Finance is a very closely related field, also courses in marketing, management, economics, and mathematics would be beneficial. A broad educational background would be most important – pick courses that interest you.
