TKE in a Box

Students Live in a Box 24/7 to Raise Funds, Awareness for Homelessness

North Andover, MA (October 30, 2008) -- What would possess college students to live in a cardboard box for five days?

Students of the Tau Kappa Epsilon (TKE) members, a fraternity at Merrimack College, will live 24/7 - rain or shine - in a makeshift shelter in an effort to bring attention to homelessness by temporarily experiencing it for themselves.“TKE in a Box” has been taking place for over ten years.

The students use cardboard, tarps, duct tape – anything to keep a “roof” over their heads. They construct the shelter directly outside of the Sakowich Campus Center where hundreds of Merrimack students, faculty, and staff members pass by daily.

WHEN: Monday, Nov. 17 through noon Friday, Nov. 21

WHY: The students are raising money for the Bread and Roses Soup Kitchen in Lawrence, MA and the National Alzheimer’s Association. The goal is to raise both funds and awareness for homelessness.

WHERE: Outside Sakowich Campus Center, Merrimack College
(315 Turnpike St., North Andover, MA 01845)
