New M.Ed., Certificate, and Licensure Programs
at Merrimack College

North Andover, MA (August 2008) -- The Master of Education (M.Ed.) and Licensure Programs at Merrimack College has added new offerings for teachers pursuing a master degree, or individuals interested in changing to a career in teaching.
 
New Option!
M.Ed., Teacher of Students with Moderate Disabilities (PreK-8)
Option VI
:  This M.Ed. program of study is for teachers who currently hold the Initial Teaching License in Elementary Education and would like to pursue a second license as a Teacher of Students with Moderate Disabilities (PreK-8). The first part of the program will prepare the candidate for the Initial Teaching License as a Teacher of Students with Moderate Disabilities; the second part of this program will be an advanced program of study. Upon completion of the program, a mentored experience in an employment setting will be required in order to secure the Professional Teaching License. This mentored experience will be supervised by the school district. 
* Students may take up to six credits before formally applying for acceptance into the program.

Non-Degree Programs of Study and Career Changers
Program C
: Professional Program of Study as a Teacher of Students with Moderate Disabilities (PreK-8) (12 credits) - This program of study is for teachers who already hold a Master Degree and Initial Licensure. According to state regulations, only 12 additional graduate credits in the Moderate Disabilities content areas are needed for advancement to the Professional Teaching License.
 
New Certificate!
Early Childhood Certificate Program for Children With/Without Disabilities (PreK-Grade 2) This non degree certificate program will focus upon preparing the candidate for working with children in PreK through Grade 2. The courses in this program will address curriculum content, appropriate teaching strategies, and modifications for children with disabilities. Additional courses will offer insights on  the organizational, financial, and legal aspects of administering  an Early Childhood Education Center.
 
Courses can be taken for degree credit or non-degree licensure credit, and are offered on campus late afternoons and early evenings, on weekends, and in an accelerated format. Other courses may be taken online through a Merrimack College partnership with PBS TeacherLine (www.teacherline.pbs.org) which offers standards-based courses in mathematics, reading/language arts, and science.
